Phase 1 (Pre-order with no questions asked money back refunds):
We will start out by offering 50 pre-orders of our Cipher Wallet device. The idea here is that you can pre-order items by sending us funds up front to pay for your purchase. We will not ship any devices until all 50 pre-orders have been paid in full. Until that time, you can request a full refund of your money back to the credit card you used or Pirate Chain refund address you provided. During this phase, you don't need a reason to get your money back. We hope you'll be patient/spread the word to get all 50 pre-orders in.
Phase 2 (All 50 pre-orders are funded):
During this phase, the "no questions asked" refund window will be closed. At this point, we will use the funds to purchase the parts, assemble the devices, and ship them to the customers in the order that the purchases were made.
Glitter nail polish will be painted over the case screws and clear, close up photos will be made of them. The device will be put in an anti-static electronics bag, in turn placed inside a serial-numbered bank cash plastic bag. We will also take a photo of the bag. These photos will then be emailed to the customer.
The device will then be placed in a shipping box and shipped to the customer, according to the shipping carrier and level of service the customer requested at purchase time. If the customer receives a damaged package, it is their responsibility to make a shipping insurance claim to recover their funds. Once received undamaged, it is the customer's responsibility to verify the tamper-evident seals on the security bag and screw heads do not show signs of tampering. If tampering appears to have happened, it is the customer's responsibility to make a shipping carrier insurance claim about that to recover their funds.
The customer then has a 15 day window of time to test the product and work with us to remedy any issues in operation. If we are unable to successfully work with the customer to get the device in a "working as advertised" manner, then the customer may return the undamaged device in return for a standard, 10% restocking fee and an RMA returns process. The merchant will pay the cost of return shipping and provide the customer with a shipping return label at no charge.
Phase 3 (All 50 pre-orders have been shipped and the last 15-day evaluation period has expired):
At this point, we will open source the project. This means all source code will be made public on a service such as github.com. This will allow anyone to review the source code for errors and/or potential security "back doors". A build document will be eventually made available, so that anyone can simply buy the parts, download the code, 3D print the case, and assemble a working device of their own. We feel this also goes a long way to garner trust in the quality of workmanship and the ability to use such a device as intended without interference.
Phase 4 (Standard orders)
At this point, we will build a small quantity of units to be sold as actual, standard orders. We will create a new inventory item to reflect this and also draw a clear distinction between the previous pre-orders and these new, standard orders. We will set the quantity of inventory of these new items to the quantity of devices that are ready to go for immediate shipment. We also plan to have additional privacy-related items on sale at our store.
